Terra Scouts | Experiences

Hello. My name is Nick Karean, and I seek to enjoy life by connecting with the beauty of nature, scenic experiences, and cinematic visuals.

The Terra Scouts project is about exploring places on foot and experiencing them at ground level.

I live in Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia known for its tropical rainforests, ancient trees, mist-covered mountains, cascading waterfalls, and beautiful coastlines.

Divided between Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo, the country is home to some of the world's oldest rainforests, remarkable wildlife, and an extraordinary diversity of natural landscapes.

From silent forest trails and winding rivers to secluded beaches and mountain peaks rising above the clouds, Malaysia offers countless opportunities to experience the natural world.

Yet preserving these places remains an ongoing challenge, as city development and human activities continue to place pressure on the environment. So, before more changes are forced into place, I wish to keep how things once were in my visual memory.

I have always been drawn to connect with nature. There is something about being surrounded by trees, listening to the sound of flowing water, or watching sunlight filter through a forest canopy that brings a sense of calm and perspective.

Away from the constant noise and demands of everyday life, there is space to slow down, observe, and appreciate the world as it is.

For me, nature is more than just a beautiful subject for digital visuals capture. It is a reminder to be present, to look beyond the endless stream of thoughts, and to appreciate the simple experience of being alive.

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are those in which nothing needs to be explained, nothing needs to be achieved, and there is just the silent act of observing.

This blog serves as a place to publish my observations of places through video, focusing on their physical characteristics and the lessons to be learned from them, alongside corresponding footage on the Terra Scouts YouTube channel.

Though it will never be the same as being in natural surroundings, I feel that cinematic photography or cinematography can at least preserve something close to those real experiences.

Through carefully composed visuals, the interplay of light and shadow, and the subtle movement of water, leaves, and clouds, a fleeting moment can become an invitation to pause and feel.

The visuals go beyond just showing a place. It conveys something of the stillness and quiet beauty we can feel when we take the time to truly observe, or rather, profoundly feel it deep within.

This will be my personal scouting collection of immersive walking and hiking in nature — from forests, landscapes, caves, waterfalls, rivers, beaches, cities, and many other beautiful places in Malaysia and maybe beyond if I get the time and chance.

Here, I share those moments from the natural world as I experience them through some photography and mostly motion pictures.

Whether it is a waterfall hidden among the trees, a shiny stretch of river, or the gentle movement of leaves in the breeze, I hope these visuals and sounds offer you a moment of stillness as well to calm the stress of everyday life as they do for me.

No talking. No music. No manufactured atmosphere. Just real places, natural sounds, and the immersive experience of just being there in the natural world while moving through the terrain, absorbing the scenery, connecting with nature, and appreciating the details.

Scouting and connecting with the terrain’s ambiance — whether to find meaning, relax, focus, study, sleep, seek an autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), or just escape the noise of everyday life.

So scout the terrain with me. Explore the scenery. Listen to the surroundings. Connect with the experience.

Thank you for being here.

Explore. Listen. Experience.
